About Me Meme

First name: My given name is Kenneth, but I only get called that in formal situations. Even when I was in trouble at home, I never got the "I will call you by your full name and you will know it means DOOOOOM!" treatment. Still, I'm extremely fond of the name for several reasons, not the least of which being the history behind it. I'm the 4th, so I have the same name as my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It makes me feel special.

I've been called many things in life, but the nicknames that have stuck (and the names I am most likely to respond to) are Ken, Kenny, Sparky, and Kyvar. In one of the classes I teach, the kids call me Yonsei, which I think translates to some combination of "Four" and "Teacher," because there's a lot of confusion as to what my last name technically is here ;)

Age: I am 22, will be 23 in March. 22 is a scary age. You're past the last milestone in a teenager's life. Yes, I get that the teens ended with 19, but when I was a teenager, 21 year olds were close enough to still qualify in my book. Now I'm 22. I'm an adult. This is somewhat troubling for the Eternal Child in me.

Location: I currently live in the heart of Mito, the capital city of Ibaraki prefecture, Japan. It's very urban. And very different from the country world I was used to back home. At home, it took 20 minutes by car to go to the grocery store. It took 45 minutes by car to go anywhere worth going. Here, it takes 7 minutes on foot to go to the grocery store. I am 15 minutes from a train station that is 1 hour from Tokyo. I have it really good.

Occupation: I am an ALT, Assistant Language Teacher. I got the job through the JET Programme, the Japan Exchange and teaching Programme. It's not what I was expecting, actually. I love teaching, I've come to realize that. The look on a kid's face when they suddenly understand something is great.

Partner: I had 2 girlfriends in high school. Each relationship lasted about 2 weeks. I'm not mature enough to be in a relationship. I'm far too selfish. And my attention span is too short.

Kids: None as of now. I really want to have kids, someday. Obstacles in the way right now, but... We'll see.

Brothers/Sisters: I have an older sister, Alexis. We were really close growing up, we weren't allowed to fight. We're still really close now. Even though we live 5 hours away from each other. The dynamic was always her looking out for me and me looking to her for support. Things are changing, we'll see what happens.

Pets: None in Japan. Back in the States, we have 2 dogs (Bristol, a Lhasa Apso/Tibetan Spaniel mix and Atlas, a Bischon Frise) and 4 cats (Phantom, Turtle, Mitzi, and Sundae). We also have a bear that visits the house from time to time and eats our bird seed, but I don't think he counts as a pet.

List the 3 biggest things going on in your life:
1. JET. I think that goes without saying. I had never lived away from home before, and my first step of independence is on the other side of the world. If I survive my contract, I think I'll be okay living on my own in the States. Living on my own is not bad. I have a very strong support base anytime I need it via my family and the internet. Life could be better, I've hit a point where I'm praying that I don't get any more bills before my next paycheck. I know where the money is going, but I can't justify not spending it without feeling awful inside. But life could be a lot worse. I have a job, a place to live, food, heat, a family that loves me and friends who are always willing to say something supportive in hard times. So I can't really complain.

2. Werewolf. I've given up on being a good player and I'm going to be a great moderator instead. There's an epic game scheduled for January 11th that I'm going to run. Players create their own roles and I make a game out of it and make sure it doesn't go burning to the ground. If it goes off with any amount of success, I'll feel worthy of the Wolf of the Week title, at least in an honorary way. New Wolves of the Week are coming through the ranks that I barely know, and it's leaving a bit of a sting that I can't play this game well while so many others just pick it up with ease. If Pure Chaos is a success, I'll be a happy "veteran" :)

3. Japan. I'm trying to learn Japanese and failing. But it's a big part of my life, so there it is.

Parents: My mother and father are still alive, still married. I was worried that when my sister and I moved out, they would grow apart, since they had us almost immediately after they got married, and we were the reason their marriage was still there. But I was happily wrong. He adores her. She loves him. It's a good match.

Who are some of your closest friends?
Alex and Alexis are the two closest, then the Werewolf community, Dave, and Atra. I'm not really a social person though.

Japan
Wow. Hard to adapt. But so far so good. We'll see when things get really busy. Climbing Fuji on Saturday!

Werewolf
I'm getting rather irritated. I signed up to co-mod a game because the mod was being slow during a time when I could assist. I don't know the rules (it's a Play By Forum of an actual game) but all I was going to do was help with vote tallies and behind the scenes stuff.

Now the mod has all but disappeared, leaving me to run the whole thing by myself. I'm constantly screwing things up with one player, I totally ignored one section of the rules and had to redo a turn, and am generally being a sucky mod. But I never intended to run the damn game! Now I'm getting a reputation for not knowing what to do as a mod and not paying attention to detail.

It's just fucking frustrating. And no one signs up for games I plan on modding solo anyway.

Jason is visiting. Jason is sometimes very cool. Jason is a gamer. This gives him cool credits.

However. Whenever playing a game with Jason, he has an annoying habit.

Jason: "I cast Humility on that, it becomes an 0/1 until the end of the turn and loses all it's abilities, and kill it." *snicker/snort*

Now, whenever playing a game with anyone, I know that they are not fools and likely have a strategy that they are working to implement and beat me with. And that's fine. The snort/snicker after EVERY GODDAMN STRATEGIC MOVE is annoying.

Like, reach across table, choke, and bash head against table annoying.

Werewolf

Rant on.

I can't post this on the WW boards since it doesn't do anything besides make me feel better for 2 minutes then guilty later, and then cause hard feelings.

But I have to fucking put it somewhere.

Xandryyte wrote: "Q also knows full well how lynchable I am... Heck, everyone knows that last point... sigh."

Everyone has buttons. When those buttons get pushed, we get angry. The Summon Xand Vote is one of Xand's. (FTR: Xand is almost silent in all of her games. The only way to get her to talk is to try to get her lynched. Then she'll lash out at the nearest person. You push people to lynch by voting for them. Thus, voting for Xand summons her.) It's gotten to the point where I won't even bother voting for her if she's not posting. It's not worth the drama when she flies in shrieking about how stupid we all are to even consider voting her when she hasn't done anything suspicious all game.

The "I'm so easy to lynch! Woe is me! You're all bullies!" line, however, really fucking pisses me off.

I get it. It's never fun to get lynched out of a game. The players are basically saying "We don't think you're good. Die." And if you aren't in any other games, you are gameless. And that's a bummer because the WW community is really great.

But let's take a look at how easy it is to get Xand lynched.

Looking at all the games that she is in, and the last 9 games she's been in. In chronological order from oldest to most recent:

849) TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN: Night 1 (Out of a 1 day game)

850) The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Heads will roll!: Day 2 (Out of a 4 day game)

851) Auto-mod: Debug 2 - Wolf and Evil Priest: Night 3	(Out of a 5 day game)

852) Clinical Depression: Night 3 (Out of a 6 day game)

854) Ultimate Showdown: Night 6	(Out of a 7 day game)

855) The Spirit of Werewolf Games past: Never died (Out of a 4 day game)

858) Auto-mod: Debug Game 1 - 2 Wolves: Day 3	(Out of a 5 day game)

859) Sailor Moon Redux: Never died (Out of a 7 day game)

861) Secret Passages (11 posts) Game In Progress (Still alive, Day 3)

862) Flight of the Conchords (17 posts) Game In Progress (Still alive, Day 4)

863) Auto-mod: Exotic Eleven (14 posts) Game In Progress (Still alive, Day 4)

864) Trouble on Mt. Olympus (14 posts) Game In Progress (Still alive, Day 4)

865) The Return of Viva Las Vegas! (17 posts) Game In Progress (Still alive, Day 4)

866) Silence, I kill you!: Never died (Out of a 2 day game)

I'm sorry Xand. I don't see how easy it is to lynch you.

SO SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH THE I ALWAYS GET LYNCHED BULLCRAP.

End Rant.

This one was pretty fun

Your result for Which fantasy writer are you?...

Robert Jordan (1948-2007)

-9 High-Brow, -1 Violent, -21 Experimental and 1 Cynical!

Congratulations! You are Low-Brow, Peaceful, Traditional and Cynical! These concepts are defined below.

Robert Jordan, the pen name for James Oliver Rigney, Jr, was the author of the best-selling Wheel of Time series. This gargantuan piece of fiction, set in a world where half the source of magic has been tainted by the Evil One, so that only women can do magic without turning insane, was published between 1990 and 2005. It is scheduled to be finished by 2011 by author Brandon Sanderson, who will be working from Jordan's extensive notes, since the latter's tragic and premature death in cardiac amyloidosis made it impossible for him to finish the series by himself.

Fantasy readers across the world will remember Jordan as the creator of one of the most detailed secondary worlds ever imagined by a single person, with carefully crafted cultures, legends and conflicts. This he used as the setting for a grand epic tale of the traditional fantasy theme of Good against Evil and seemingly insignificant people discovering that they are destined to play an important role in this struggle. Although the plot centres around conflict and several important characters are warriors, be it by choice or necessity, Jordan does not bask in gory details of violence and war is described as something evil that essentially does more harm than good. However, he is able to discern the forces that might push countries into conflict, leaving little room for over-romantic notions of ever-lasting peace.

All this makes Jordan's epic tale the choice for those who are not daunted by the scope and length of what is, perhaps, the longest story ever written. There are plenty who would say that it is also one of the best.

You are also a lot like J K Rowling.

If you want some action, try David Eddings.

If you'd like a challenge, try your exact opposite, Gene Wolfe.

Your score

This is how to interpret your score: Your attitudes have been measured on four different scales, called 1) High-Brow vs. Low-Brow, 2) Violent vs. Peaceful, 3) Experimental vs. Traditional and 4) Cynical vs. Romantic. Imagine that when you were born, you were in a state of innocence, a tabula rasa who would have scored zero on each scale. Since then, a number of circumstances (including genetical, cultural and environmental factors) have pushed you towards either end of these scales. If you're at 45 or -45 you would be almost entirely cynical, low-brow or whatever. The closer to zero you are, the less extreme your attitude. However, you should always be more of either (eg more romantic than cynical). Please note that even though High-Brow, Violent, Experimental and Cynical have positive numbers (1 through 45) and their opposites negative numbers (-1 through -45), this doesn't mean that either quality is better. All attitudes have their positive and negative sides, as explained below.

High-Brow vs. Low-Brow

You received -9 points, making you more Low-Brow than High-Brow. Being high-browed in this context refers to being more fascinated with the sort of art that critics and scholars tend to favour, while a typical low-brow would favour the best-selling kind. At their best, low-brows are honest enough to read what they like, regardless of what "experts" and academics say is good for them. At their worst, they are more likely to read what their neighbours like than what they would choose themselves.

Violent vs. Peaceful

You received -1 points, making you more Peaceful than Violent. This scale is a measurement of a) if you are tolerant to violence in fiction and b) whether you see violence as a means that can be used to achieve a good end. If you aren't, and you don't, then you are peaceful as defined here. At their best, peaceful people are the ones who encourage dialogue and understanding as a means of solving conflicts. At their worst, they are standing passively by as they or third parties are hurt by less scrupulous individuals.

Experimental vs. Traditional

You received -21 points, making you more Traditional than Experimental. Your position on this scale indicates if you're more likely to seek out the new and unexpected or if you are more comfortable with the familiar, especially in regards to culture. Note that traditional as defined here does not equal conservative, in the political sense. At their best, traditional people don't change winning concepts, favouring storytelling over empty poses. At their worst, they are somewhat narrow-minded.

Cynical vs. Romantic

You received 1 points, making you more Cynical than Romantic. Your position on this scale indicates if you are more likely to be wary, suspicious and skeptical to people around you and the world at large, or if you are more likely to believe in grand schemes, happy endings and the basic goodness of humankind. It is by far the most vaguely defined scale, which is why you'll find the sentence "you are also a lot like x" above. If you feel that your position on this scale is wrong, then you are probably more like author x. At their best, cynical people are able to see through lies and spot crucial flaws in plans and schemes. At their worst, they are overly negative, bringing everybody else down.

Author picture from Wikipedia.
My eyes need to... something.

I was reading Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads for Lit. Crit. and I swear one of the lines said "the power of human imagination is sufficient to produce such marshmallows."

Yay for imaginary marshmallows?

Procrastinating
I'm a procrastinator. I think that's fairly obvious by the fact that most of my posts are of the "I don't want to do this project that I've left til the last minute!" variety.

But I put off sleep. Somehow, my brain has gotten the idea that I don't need sleep or something. I just have no desire to sleep. Unless I'm already sleeping, then I have no desire to get up.

That's fun.

Werewolf
So, in order to stave off sleep, I'm going to ramble about Werewolf for a while.

Werewolf was originally a party game, and is probably best experienced face to face. In the most basic game, the players make up the members of the village. But some of the villagers are not as they seem! They are actually vicious werewolves.

The game is played in phases, Day and Night. During the Day, everyone talks about who they suspect of being a werewolf. Eventually, everyone votes for the person they think is most likely to be a werewolf. The person with the most votes against them gets lynched by the angry mob and is removed from the game. Then everyone gets to see whether the person was a werewolf or not.

After the lynch, the village goes to sleep, everyone puts their head down, closes their eyes and the Night begins. During the Night, the wolves open their eyes and agree upon a victim. That person is eaten, and the wolves go back to sleep. Then everyone wakes up, finds out who was killed during the night, and the next Day begins.

The game ends when one of two things happens. If all the werewolves are lynched, the game ends and the village wins! However, if the wolves ever achieve parity with the remaining villagers, the wolves reveal themselves and massacre the remaining villagers.

It's a game of being able to read people, weave lies and see through those lies. It's great fun, too. But you have to be the type of person who doesn't take it personally when everyone thinks you're lying and wants you dead. ;)

There are roles that can be introduced to the game to make it more interesting. For example, there is a seer role. Every night, the seer chooses one person and is told whether or not that person is a werewolf. There is a little girl role who can try to peek while the wolves are selecting their victim, but she has to be careful not to be seen or the wolves will kill her. There's a hunter who can kill another player when he dies.

I find the game to be great, but I'm a miserable liar, so I kind of suck at it ;) I also only play an online version of it, which makes it a bit different.

Games
I've come to the realization that while I love playing games, I love learning the rules to a game almost as much if not as much or more than actually playing it. Give me a rulebook and I will devour it. Somehow my brain will just play out the game without me having to when I read the rules. It's great.

I seriously get enjoyment out of reading rules to games. I wonder if that's a marketable skill? ;)
